Since finishing our basement our son's toys have dramatically filled the floor space, and we needed a solution. So we were searching for a solution to clear the clutter and have some extra seating near the bar as well. My husband did the searching for the ottomans and he found these at Target.com and they were a great price. They were on sale and because we have a Red card they were an extra 20% off. Could not go wrong, right?! The space we had to fill was between two pillars which was a little over six feet and each ottoman was three feet wide so we purchased two.
3 square problems~
So now the problem was those hideous pillows that came with our amazing couch (you can see one in the background). I wanted to cover them with fabric that would either pair well with the ottomans or find the exact fabric. I searched on several sites for a good pairing fabric and at one point I thought I hit the jackpot on Hancockfabric.com finding the exact fabric because they had fabric that matched other ottomans that are sold at Target.com but that was a dead end. However, with a little persistence and time on my hands I finally found the fabric on Fabric.com! I was so excited I could have burst!
Here is the pic of the Ottoman in their space in the basement.
Style~
I knew that I wanted to make an envelope pillow cover so they could easily be removed for washing. With two kids, a cat and dog things are bound to get dirty! I knew the general idea of how to cut the fabric to cover them but I didn't know how much extra fabric for stitching. I then searched online for a tutorial on to find specifics of How-to, and this is the site I used: http://theblueeyeddove.com/2014/06/18/diy-envelope-throw-pillow-covers/#more-1572
Then I got to work! There were two problem I faced while working on these throw pillow covers. The first was keeping my son entertained while I worked, and the second was that I do not own a yard stick for nice long straight cuts. I improvised and ended up cutting a cardboard box to be a long guide. Once the pieces were cut it was as simple as sewing them together.
End Result~
Here is a photo of two of the three pillows. Don't they look great?!?
If we aren't adding the ottoman cost ($140.00), the fabric for this project was a mere $36.93 for 1.5 yards. And as far as time frame, they took me maybe 2 hours from start to finish to make. There is one more addition that I added to the room for practical reasons and that was the lime green serving tray that is on the ottoman. We needed a solid surface for beverages so I found this little $20.00 addition that helps keep our drinks in the upright position!
I hope you liked my first post ~ Stay tuned for the next DIY project!
